It is rare to find a person who has not read one of the Harry Potter novels, or at least seen some of the movies. Harry Potter costumes are a great choice for kids and adults for the Halloween season. The term Harry Potter can be used lightly, as to the fact that if you are a female you could go as one of the female characters from one of the novels. While the Harry Potter character has been done previously in other Halloween seasons, there are ways that you can make your outfit an original.

The basis piece that completes the witch or wizard attire is a robe. The color should be black and made of a very heavy material. The most commonly used material for this is velvet. The added benefit is that you will stay warm on the chilly night. Your robe, or cloak, should also have a hood, but it does not have to be worn on your head. Most of the characters rarely wore the hood on their head and this will only take away from the rest of your outfit.

A wand is also important, and many of the Harry Potter characters were hardly seen without the magical instrument. A gnarled wand would be more appropriate for a scarier effect, but there are also straight wands available. Under your cloak should be a white button down shirt, with a tie and black pants. This is to complete the school uniform. The color of your tie will depend on the house that you are representing. Gryffindor is scarlet and gold stripes, Slytherin is green and silver, Hufflepuff is yellow and black, and Ravenclaw is blue and bronze. Another great touch is a scarf. You can find a scarf to match the tie or a solid color that goes with the costume.

If you are going as Harry Potter himself, then you will need the lightening bolt shaped scar on the right side of your forehead. He also wore his round-framed glasses throughout most of the films. No matter which character you are portraying, a great touch to the costume would be to carry a broom. The broom was not the basic house keeping broom that many of us have. Instead, all of the bristles are gathered together and bound with string or wire. Another accessory that you could carry in your hand instead of the wand or broom is the Hogwarts lantern. The lantern is battery operated and works like a regular lantern with an on and off switch.
